Things to Do in The Smoky Mountains

East Tennessee is home to a multitude of tourist attractions suitable for every taste. Whether you are in the mood for a stroll down the main strip in Gatlinburg or a family visit to Dollywood, there is always something to do in the Smokies. We all love Ripley’s Aquarium, spectacular dinner theaters, and of course, shopping! But today, we would like to invite you to take a trip off the beaten path and consider a few “non-touristy” ideas recommended by us, locals.

  1. Raft Pigeon River rapids

This 1.5-2 hr long trip will allow you to navigate over 70 white water rapids of various difficulty levels. Both, novice and experienced participants will feel safe accompanied by certified guides who are eager to share their knowledge and love for the great outdoors. The Pigeon River is located along Tennessee - North Carolina border and is only an hour away from Elvira’s Cafe. Big waves, big drops, and lots of fun are guaranteed!

2. Hike up to Andrews Bald

Andrews Bald is a hidden gem known only to a handful of local hikers. Traversed for many years, the trail was rebuilt in 2008 with new staircases which make the hike suitable and safe for a moderate climb. The best part is seeing spectacular panoramas of the Great Smoky Mountains without running into tourist crowds. Andrews Bald is named after a grassy meadow at the top of the mountain rising 5,920 feet above sea level. If you go in the late spring, you will catch some of the most beautiful displays of blooming azaleas and rhododendrons and may even get lucky enough to see a dear or a black bear!

3. Journey down to Whiteoak Sinks

Whiteoak Sinks is a perfect hiking destination, especially in April and May when blooming wildflowers form a colorful palette. Surrounded by steep hills, this natural flower basin is quietly tucked away from the main high-trafficked areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is accessible by all skill levels. White Oak Sinks borrowed its name from nearby caves known as “sinkholes”. These caves are home to a rare population of bats that gives the area a mysterious feel. Besides countless species of wildflowers, you’ll witness old rock walls and historic remains of the first Appalachian settlements. Visiting them will take you back in time for a memorable journey.

4. View Synchronous Fireflies

Located only a short distance from touristy Gatlinburg, the Elkmont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to an amazing site. Every May, tens of thousands of fireflies light up the night forest with the amazing performance of flashing lights. Elkmont campground hosts the largest population of synchronous fireflies that flash with consecutive bursts of light followed by a few seconds of complete darkness. This rare show performed by nature itself resembles a magical fairyland and is definitely worth seeing at least once.
